Wow, what a day! Achievers has it's FIRST NATIONAL CHAMPION! George and I are so proud.
Let's see.... here is how it went down...
We started on beam. Great warm-up. Great 30 second touch. GREAT HIT ROUTINE WITH AMAZING PRESENTATION all the way to a STUCK dismount. Ahhhhhhhh, a stuck beam dismount is the cheery on top. I was so proud and of course.... it brought tears to my eyes. The 4 judges had a long conference over her routine, so we had to wait a while for her score. YEA!!! She scored a 9.475.
Off to floor...
Great warm-up and awesome competition routine. Paige's first pass (an amazing front double full) always impresses the other gymnasts and coaches watching. She scored a 9.525.
Off to vault! My oh my! Paige trained and competed a front handspring one and a half twist all year. She performed it almost perfect. The start value, the highest she could have scored, was a 9.40. At the regional championships she scored a near perfect 9.25. Paige placed 2nd all around at regionals and knew she needed a higher level vault to have a chance at winning the all around title at Western Nationals. Paige is a little afraid to go for this vault and doesn't always flip like she is supposed to. George was amazing with her for the past few weeks. He pumped her up, believed in her, and gave her confidence to upgrade her vault to a front handspring front. It was amazing to watch. During the last few weeks back in Denton training, Paige's first front handspring front of the day was always out of this world amazing. So when she decided to only warm up timers George trusted her that her first competition vault would be awesome. She was the first competitor up on vault. I think I could hear the hearts pounding up in the stands from our fans.... Paige salutes, starts her sprint down the run way, hits the board, tight block and WOW WAS IT HUGE!!!!!!!!!!!! She did the vault as good as we would have hoped. Wow! Absolutely one of the best feelings I have ever had. I was soooooooo proud of Paige!
One more event! Paige was .05 behind the leader in the competition going into bars.
Warm up in the back gym was great. We came out to the competition gym and Paige fell 3x during her 30 second touch warm up. She pulled it together quickly and became an Athlete Warrior. She was last up on bars, so we had a lot of routines and a lot of falls to watch before Paige competed. Our region did not do very well on bars - well, except for PAIGE! Her routine was clean and pretty. She scored a 9.225. We were pleased, but had no idea how the meet turned out at this point. We just knew that Paige rocked all 4 events and George and I could not have been more proud of her!!!
When the awards started George and I took our rock star photographer spot right in front of the award stand just in case we needed to take some great pics of Paige up on that award stand. Well, we certainly did!!! Paige placed in the top 10 on EVERYTHING!!! 1st on beam & 1st in the all around. The pic below of her grabbing her face is when they called her name for the all around title. She was shocked and teary. It was an exciting moment.
There was also a competition between the 4 regions in the competition and Region 3 (our Region) pulled out the win!!!!
After the meet we headed downtown for a photo shoot. We got about 15 min of pictures before the rainfall started (and still has not ended).
Phyllis competes at 12:30pm tomorrow! Think solid thoughts!!! Go Phyllis!!!
Big Smiles, J :)
